The passage of time creates voids in cities; those unused spaces that once had served the city, such as factories, local railway stations, army barracks, and former hospitals. Abandonment of agriculture in out-of-town areas brings the same fate upon large rural farms, former foci of rural life as described by Ermanno Olmi in his movie ’The Tree of Wooden Clogs’. Such isolated farms, in Tuscany surrounded by olive groves or vineyards, are today mainly used for rural tourism or as private villas for those who wish to retreat into repose and solitude, to be surrounded by nature after a busy day, and there are more and more of such days.
